New Year’s Resolution 2010 #1: Comment More

pay-it-forwardMy social media consumption workflow has changed quite a bit over the last year or so. I still really love Google Reader’s share feature and use that as a bedrock of how I absorb and share information, along with Twitter and even (for me) Facebook of late.

I also like to use Google Readers “shared + note” feature as a quick and easy way to drop a short comment on stories I like while I’m sharing the story with my Google contacts. However, just today I realized that I’m doing myself and my fellow bloggers a disservice in the sense that I don’t leave comments on the “source” blog post page nearly as much as I used to.

I also realized that (the newly redesigned!) Online Media Cultist doesn’t get nearly as many comments as it used to. Part of this is my fault as I go through lengthy periods where I’m not posting a ton, and part of it has to do with the fact that comments get distributed on places like Twitter, Facebook, Digg, etc.

The “distributed conversation” thing is where the Internet and blogosphere is going, and I’m fine with that. People want to have conversations where they’re hanging out, which in fact is why I’ve become so accustomed to leaving comments via Google Reader!

But, as they say, I can control my own actions. And that leads to my new year’s resolution #1 for 2010: comment more.

I resolve to comment on the source blog page of five blogs each day, every weekday.

It’s part of my social media goodwill plan for the new year. Pay it forward, y’all.

  • Hi! where can I download Google Reader’s share feature? and how much does it cost?
    Thanks:)
  • It's a free feature! Just click share or share + note under any story
in each RSS feed that you're tracking.

Well, my first resolution for 2010 is to stop spending so much time on that time-eater Spacebook. That will give me more time to call my friends. But I can't give up blogs. I'm addicted to them. My second resolution is to stop griping about my cell phone provider, take control of my life and get that new Straight Talk unlimited prepaid service for $45 a month I've been checking out. Oh, and I've made a resolution to see more movies this coming year.
  • Carving out time for real life interaction is always a good resolution !

New Year’s Resolution: Try to relax more and worry less. This is very difficult, especially with times as they are and my nature to be a worrier instead of an easysaver. I need to allow faith to take hold, blind faith, that all will be okay.
  • You are not permitted to make New Years' resolutions in December. It is a violation. :)
  • Argh, I need to learn the rules for next time! Feel like I unilaterally moved ahead of the Iowa caucuses or something :-)
  • That's a good resolution Eric. One I keep trying to remind myself of also. :)
  • Thanks so much Phil !
  • I like your 2010 resolution and wish you well. Stay happy and healthy!
  • Thanks so much and likewise Johnnie !
  • I welcome your resolution! :) I like to comment at the original source myself, because I feel it is the closest you get to the author, and is the highest form of reciprocative feedback. There are times when commenting via other social networks is used in the form of "speaking behind one's back", which I think is pretty lame.
  • Very well said Mahendra! As far as speaking "behind one's back," I think that is true at times *but* the fundamental issue is that the original publisher is often not alerted which more often than not means *positive* feedback and positive conversations are kicked off without the publisher even being aware !
  • Yes, of course, I was mentioning an extreme case. :)

Tamar, LG, and others have had an interesting discussion on some of these aspects on her blog: http://bit.ly/8TkKyt
  • "I resolve to comment on the source blog page of five blogs each day, every weekday." Now that is an ambitious resolution, but it clearly has benefits for yourself and the bloggers who receive the comments. Now I have to ask myself if I could make a similar resolution.
  • Well, I'm certainly resolving, let's hope I can keep it up! :-)
