Online Media Cultist

Web producer, writer, online media cultist. That's how I roll.

You need to stop what you’re doing and check out Brazen Careerist

Every once in a while – not all that often, really – I come across a blog I’ve never seen before that blows me away. Something different, something real, refreshing. And addictive reading to boot!

I found one, and it was thanks to Google Reader’s brilliant Friends’ shared items feature and, in particular, my man Jason Kaneshiro of webomatica fame.

It’s called Brazen Careerist, and has the somewhat pedestrian tagline of “Advice at the intersection of work and life.” However, many of the posts (and I found myself rolling through one after another) are nothing short of brilliant.

It’s gripping narrative non-fiction brought to blog land. Specifically, we find the travails (and there are many) of Penelope, start-up founder and newspaper columnist. The reason why it’s great and gripping stuff is that we’re allowed way inside the struggles of a bootstrapped start-up scratching and clawing to make ends meet. And it’s told in such a compelling way – funny, sad, intriguing – that as a reader you’re left thinking, “I don’t want to see where this story goes. I need to see where this story goes. Like right now, dial up another entry, good RSS reader, if you will.”

Here’s Jason’s shared + note from Google Reader that got me initially hooked, by the way:

“I love this blog… it’s always an addicting mix of entrepreneur / soap opera / mommy blogger angst.”

Jason’s right. You need to stop what you’re doing right now and give it the check out. Just make sure you have a couple hours that you can spare first.

Here’s a little taste from a post called The art of knowing when to hide and when to reach out:

So Ryan tells me not to use the credit card and I remind him that I am still in sulking mode.
He says, “Why are you sulking? The email from Erik wasn’t even that bad this morning. ”

Erik is our board member who I am not really sure if he thinks its okay that I’m using his name. But maybe he can just tell people it’s a different Erik.

So I misread Erik’s email and am sulking about it, but Ryan points out that it was actually a very reasonable email.

This is why I like Erik. And Ryan. They are both reasonable, measured, calm guys. This is the kind of person I need to be around.

Because here’s what I did next. I told myself that I had to put on makeup to go to work. You have to do that if you’re a girl and want to be taken seriously. I know you think I don’t care about being taken seriously because I’m writing stuff about sulking over board members, but you know what? Writing these posts is fine for my seriousness level. Trust me on this. Because my blog gets a lot of traffic, so shut up.
