Yeah, it's pretty cool. John Edwards actually blazed the trail on twitter way back in its early days last year but unfortunately hasn't kept up with it after he dropped out of the race.

You might also like updates from Downing Street on twitter (https://twitter.com/DowningStreet), which frequently posts about the goings on in the Prime Minister's office in the UK.

Well, the Internet had not yet become a huge factor in presidential politics (drudge and lewinsky notwithstanding) so I didn't head back that far! You bring up a good point though -- what's sometimes referred to as "gotcha politics" certainly predates the interwebs. That said, the era of 24/7 media and blogs and youtube accelerates and influences the news cycle and politics itself like never before.

The McCain Report sounds interesting, will have to check it out.

Instead of "in the wake of John Kerry’s 2004 loss to George W. Bush," you might mean "in the wake of John McCain's 2000 primary loss to George W. Bush," given that push-polling debacle. Obama's campaign has stated that they definitely learned from McCain's loss in 2000 that one must actively respond even during the primaries.

Of course, you and I have differed on the value of social networks forever, so you won't be surprised to find that I think my.barackobama.com is unappealing to me. Let's say he wins and heralds in a new era in U.S. politics. Now fast-forward ten years. Still happy with that my.barackobama.com membership, after he's been out of office two years? Meh.

One of the very few interesting things on McCain's site is actually not the official blog, but the fact that there are two, and one is an uncensored "straight talk" blog from Michael Goldfarb called The McCain Report. Dude is off the chain, and I'm just waiting for someone to finally shut the blog down, but there it is for now on the official site. Crazy.
