Xavier - I would "read forward" on blackberry as well but that's the point where my laziness compels me to simply read backwards ;-)

I start "following" people I think are interesting, usually those who are having conversations of interest with others that I'm following. Then its a matter of engaging them and convincing them that it would be worthwhile to follow me... I agree, though, I have a compulsive need of some sort to read my tweets in order, to follow the conversation the way it actually occurred... but for me, that includes when I'm on my blackberry.

When I'm home on the weekend, nerding out with the laptop and TV on in the background, I like hanging out on twitter and reading just about every post.

This actually brings up another topic -- reading twitter on the web versus using a desktop app (twhirl, alert thingy, etc.). I find that for regular twitter check-ins I actually prefer the web, but during nerding out, more relaxed times I like using twhirl.

I'm in pretty much the same boat, at least for the time being. Though I will dig back through pages of Twitter tweets online when I have the time. I use Friendfeed differently from Twitter, so I always just look at the most recent posts. It's a nice way to cast the net a little bit wider to see what people are reading, writing, and sharing.

I've moved from your fifth bullet to your fourth bullet.

When I first started using Twitter last fall, I did read every post, but at a certain point I found that I was unable to do so. (Same with FriendFeed, by the way.) Now I simply dip my finger in the water and see what's happened in the last few minutes. I couple this with TweetScan searches against my "oemperor" handle or against topics of interest.
