Janice, Twitter is a service that lets people communicate with each through very short messages (maximum 140 characters). The brevity of the communication, and the ease with which people can access the service, is a key to its attraction and success. Twitter is set up into two groups: friends and followers. When I add someone as a friend, I see all of their messagaes. (You can see all the incoming Twitter messages or "tweets" on my Twitter profile page here.) When someone adds me as a friend, they become my follower and see all of my tweets on their Twitter profile page. I use Twitter on the web, but that's not the only way to do it: you can also use the service via instant messenger or mobile device. This flexibility allows people to tweet and receive messages anytime they're connected to the Internet. It's essentially like "mini-blogging," so I think it tends to appeal most to folk (like me!) who are already big blogging fans.
