Yup, that about sums it up. I can't believe they never responded to any of my complaints, yet their Director of Operations was willing to put on his FAVORITE DIGGS a link to something he knew to be stolen content from my site. Craziness - guess he's not too good to openly support plagiarism, but he IS too good to respond to someone who complains about it ;)

Thanks allsux, very interesting. This ties into my not loving the Internet-wide festival of fakery and chicanery every April 1!

I was really surprised that Digg would personally respond in such a manner. In fact I believe a real issue that they have is that they're too hands off with their community and the public.

The short answer: that particular e-mail was an April Fool's Day joke (explained on allsux.com). For the full story, which started with Digg refusing to remove a popular but plagiarized post from their site, and for a fun way to mess with Digg see: http://allsux.com

Aside from the letter, everything else on the site regarding is true (and verifiable, for that matter), including the fact that Digg Director of Operations Scott (Steve was made up) Baker added to his *own Digg list* a link to a pirated image from my site - thus openly breaking the Digg Terms of Service and advocating plagiarism by his actions.

Meanwhile, for bringing this all to Digg's attention I have had my account suspended and IP address banned from the site. Allsux also has links to reputable sources (including Wired, Slashdot and Wikipedia) for those of you interested in more examples of the extent of Digg's corruption. Please feel free to link to my site and direct others to it - I'm interested in sharing the news of how much Digg sux :)

I wrote a piece on my "down time" sites a little while back, and Reddit serves my needs as well, Mat. Social news sites in the end are communities, and for whatever reason I seem to feel more at home at Reddit than at Digg.

I still go to Digg on occasion, and do vote on some stories, my daily needs are served by Reddit.

Amy, I can't confirm whether it's real, but it certainly looks real and Steve Baker really is a Digg employee. I agree about how it looks -- it's ever so easy to change allegience on the Internet, particularly in hot and growing spaces such as social news.

Mat -- while I think Digg can be very useful (and certainly drives a lot of traffic!) I'm a big Reddit fan as well.
